A Philanthropic Initiative to Stop Hunger and Create a Better World!

For the last few years I've been feeding nuts, seeds and fruit to the wonderful squirrels (and birds) at my apartment complex. I was feeding bees on my balcony for a while but now I focus on my hummingbirds. Around two weeks ago, specifically between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, I discovered that my step daughter's school was giving away extra fruit. A lot of extra fruit! My original intention was to grab as much fruit as I possibly could to feed the squirrels at my apartment complex and the squirrels at one of the libraries I go to, however there was so much fruit that I felt I should be sharing it with others as well- particularly my needy brothers and sisters of humanity... the homeless! There is definitely not a shortage of homeless and hungry people in LA so I experienced no problem finding people to donate this fruit to. In fact, the response to the fruit was so positive that I became inspired to share my squirrel's nuts and seeds with the homeless as well. I pondered the question of why so many people must suffer from hunger when we could just simply plant seeds and grow food for people to eat. Why must we work for paper money to supply us with food that the planet already supplies us with for free? I thought about all the earlier civilizations like the Mayans and the Incas that lived peacefully without a monetary system in place.

I envisioned having a million dollar budget to help the world and end hunger and wondered how I could go about doing so. I would need a solid plan...a vision! And then it came to me! Something so simple...

The Free Food Field Initiative: We start off by donating small organically grown fruit trees to home owners. We help them plant the trees and in return, when the tree harvests fruit they provide a basket of free fruit in front of their home for all to enjoy. If every home owner enlisted in our program, no one on the planet would ever go hungry again. Within a generation we could eliminate starvation entirely. The end result would be miles upon miles of free food fields for all to enjoy for generations to come. Donations would support the purchase of organically grown trees and labor costs for planting the trees. Or we could enlist volunteers to help plant the trees for free? Future goals for the Free Food Field Initiative include purchasing land to grow even more free food for all of humanity (and animals) to share! The end goal is to cover the entire planet with fruit, nut and seed bearing plants thus creating a new Garden of Eden for all to enjoy. If starvation were to end for good, world peace would surely ensue!

Upon further investigation I found that one particular non-profit organization called The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation is planting fruit bearing trees in low income neighbors. I propose to start out in neighbors with high rates of homelessness and eventually branch out to all possible locations. As an incentive, home owners in higher income areas could possibly receive a tax write off or tax credit for participating in our program. This could probably be achieved by having homeowners sign up with our program to continuously donate a certain amount of fruit, nuts and/ or seeds to nearby homeless shelters and/or food banks.

Finally... I have yet another vision, and perhaps the implementation of this vision would be optimal for those wishing to free themselves from the tyranny of government control, or rather corporate control, over the food supply. In this vision of true freedom I would purchase private land to create sovereign communities of righteous like-minded individuals... communities exempt from all of the hypocrisies and turmoil of modern day society. In this vision hunger would no longer exist, nor crime, nor depression and all members of these communities would work together to grow their own food and cohabitate peacefully and abundantly with no need for paper money. These sovereign communities, trading amongst one another, could very well be the new Atlantis, a utopian paradise, that we've all been waiting for. It's an exciting prospect and one I anticipate participating in...very soon in the near future! With the help of my enlightened brothers and sisters of the quest I look forward to creating a beautiful new future free from poverty, hunger and strife!

As these wonderful thoughts for the future filled my mind, heart and soul, this song kept repeating in my head...

"There is a brotherhood of man

A benevolent brotherhood of man

A noble tie that binds

All human hearts and minds

Into one brotherhood of man

But I have learned there's one great club

That all of us are in

There is a brotherhood of man

A benevolent brotherhood of man

A noble tie that binds

All human hearts and minds

Into one brotherhood of man

Your life long membership is free

Keep a-giving each brother all you can

Oh, aren't you proud to be in that fraternity

The great big brotherhood of man?"

And in the great words of John Lennon "You may say I'm a dreamer. But I'm not the only one. I hope some day you'll join us. And the world will be as one."

Yes, you may say I'm a dreamer, however according to this article in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists "Peaceful societies are not utopian fantasy. They exist."

I shall leave you with these inspiring quotes that somehow managed to land in my email messages at the exact right time...

“What counts in life

is not the mere fact that we have lived.

It is what difference we have made to the lives of others

that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”

Nelson Mandela

“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains,

but to live in a way

that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

Nelson Mandela

“Let there be justice for all.

Let there be peace for all.

Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all.

Let each know that for each the body,

the mind and the soul have been freed

to fulfill themselves.”

Nelson Mandela
