A Retrograde Nightmare-My Elderly Cat Dottie Must be Cured!
Before I left on my trip to NY I knew that something was wrong with my beloved elderly calico cat Dottie. She had been drinking tons of water and appeared to be losing weight. Upon returning from my trip Dottie felt extremely bony when I pet her. She must have lost even more weight! I wanted to take her to the vet that helped my other cat survive cryptococcus of the central nervous system, however I knew that the blood test and everything else would be double the price. So I took Dottie to a vet that actually gave my cat the wrong appetite stimulant many years ago. So I already knew that I would probably have to get a 2nd opinion from the expensive vet.
So on Monday August 12th I took Dottie to the cheaper vet. She was dehydrated and the vet suspected that she had a thyroid issue, a kidney issue or the big C! She was given a blood test/ urinalysis and an iv for dehydration. I received her results the next day. Dottie was diagnosed with excessive thyroid production, hyperthyroidism, abnormal renal function and a urinary infection. She was prescribed with thyroid medication to be administered twice a day every 12 hours 30 mins before food. I chose 5:30 am and 5:30 pm since I had been getting up and going to sleep early in order to sun gaze. I was also told that Dottie needed an antibiotic shot for her urinary infection. She also needed to be on a special diet to support kidney function. She needed a diet low in protein, low in magnesium, low in salt and with grains. All my cats had been on a grain free diet for years! They recommended Royal Canin, Science Diet or Purina Urinary. These are all bad brands that contain GMO's but I had no choice at the moment. I purchased a few cans of Science Diet k/d. I knew that I had to do some research to find a better brand of cat food for Dottie, and probably for the rest of my cats since they all eat out of each other's bowls. Interestingly, Dottie was purring at that first vet visit. She was also purring a lot at home when I crawled under the bed to pet and comfort her. She was very aware that I was trying my very best to make her feel better.
Regardless...administering the pill was a torturous nightmare for both of us. After 11 years Dottie is still a bit feral and difficult to pick up. I thought to myself that the stress of giving her the thyroid medication twice a day might kill us both. I knew intuitively that we both couldn't go on this way. It was a quality of life issue. Giving Dottie the pill was very upsetting to both of us... and made me feel very depressed! I cried a lot! During this time I took Dottie back to the cheap vet for an antibiotic shot...
I noticed that Dottie lost her appetite after taking the pills and after getting her injection. This was very concerning to me. She was already severely underweight. On Wednesday I took her to the expensive vet since she still wasn't eating. They told me that Dottie was very sick and that her health would most certainly deteriorate. They told me that besides kidney disease and hyperthyroidism Dottie also has heart disease and dental disease. The other vet didn't even catch this! The good expensive vet also said that her heart has a gallop rhythm which means she should not be given an iv with fluids because it could make her worse or perhaps even kill her. They also told me that no amount of iv fluids could hydrate her anyway. She would be hopelessly dehydrated until she died. So they didn't even offer to give her an iv with fluids. I hope the cheap vet didn't give her too many fluids in the iv? Perhaps they didn't notice the gallop rhythm?
(FYI... A gallop rhythm in cats is a third heart sound that can be heard with a stethoscope when listening to the heart. It's a sign of severe heart disease and can indicate impending heart failure. The term comes from the sound of S3 or S4 heart sounds, which can sound similar to a horse galloping. However, the term "gallop rhythm" should be avoided because the sound doesn't relate to the heart's electrical rhythm.
Other signs of heart failure in cats include:
Lethargy
Weakness
Labored breathing
Increased breathing rate
Loss of appetite
Reluctance to exercise
Cold paws and ears
Lowered body temperature
Gallop rhythms can be detected in 15% of cats with cardiomyopathy, a myocardial disease that can cause diastolic heart failure, systolic dysfunction, and other conditions. Common causes of S3 gallop include: Congestive heart failure (CHF) secondary to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), and Severe mitral regurgitation (MR).
Common causes of S4 gallop include: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and Systemic hypertension.) TERRIBLE!
Also, in regards to the urinary infection, the expensive vet told me that the other vet was supposed to culture the urine in order to figure out which antibiotic to prescribe. They didn't do this and quite possibly gave her the wrong antibiotic. (I found out later from the cheap vet that they didn't culture the urine because it would cost $400 more. They didn't even bother to tell me that the antibiotic shot might not work!) The expensive vet wanted to do more blood work but I declined. I did however get Dottie an anti-nausea shot and appetite stimulant to be placed on her ears. I was told to keep her on her present medication and to euthanize her if she didn't eat again in 1 to 2 days. I was horrified! Furthermore the expensive vet told me that all the money in the world couldn't save Dottie. I told this vet that I would attempt to prove her wrong. I told her about 4 herb/Essiac tea sold by the Herbal Healer Academy. She was very interested and wanted me to write it down for her so she could look into it further. So I gave her all the info!
4 herb/ Essiac tea is known as a natural cure for cancer, however it also balances the thyroid and alleviates and sometimes cures many chronic and degenerative conditions because it cleanses the blood as well as the liver and strengthens the immune system. More info on Essiac/ 4 herb tea below!
I called my best friend/ spiritual mentor to discuss the situation with him at which point I decided to take her off the thyroid meds since she stopped eating and drinking after I started giving her the meds. And of course it was also a quality of life issue for both myself and Dottie. Administering the pill was hellish for both of us! I didn't want her last days on earth to be torturous! I also decided to start dosing her with 4 herb/Essiac tea that I would brew myself.
4 herb/ Essiac tea is great, however the only problem was that I had to wait for the herbs to arrive. I did however have some old herbs that had been sitting in my freezer for years. I called the company to find out if they would still be good to brew. They told me that I shouldn't use herbs more than 3 years old but only because they would be weaker. Since it was an emergency they said I could try using the old herbs anyway. The new herbs would arrive next week on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. In the meantime Dottie received the anti- nausea shot and I placed the appetite stimulant on her ear. She was very squirmy and so I may have not put enough on her. She wouldn't eat the food I placed in front of her, although she was purring and made a few attempts to eat.
Luckily I found a canned cat food that seemed comparable but healthier than Science Diet. It's called Forza10 Wet Renal Care Cat Food with Lamb, 3.5 Ounce Can Kidney Support and Renal Health. I purchased the 12 pack on Amazon with next day delivery. But after I made the purchase I was told that the delivery would be Saturday instead of Friday. I also purchased a treat called Hartz Delectables Squeeze Up Senior 10+ Interactive Lickable Wet Cat Treats 4 Count (Pack of 8). I decided to make this purchase based on a review for Forza10. A person was discussing how their sick cat wouldn't eat anything but the cat loved the Hartz treats and would eat the cat food mixed with it. So I figured it was worth a shot! The treats were scheduled to arrive on Friday. I also brewed 4 herb tea from the old batch of herbs which would be ready to add to their food on Friday as well!
On Thursday I emailed the Rosicrucian order to ask the Council of Solace to help send some extra healing energy to Dottie and myself. Friday was miraculous! Before leaving to do my sun ritual I placed 1/2 teaspoon of freshly brewed 4 herb tea in a special water bowl in Dottie's cat bed under my bed. During my sun gazing meditation I asked the spirits to help me with Dottie. Then I entered the Rosicrucian celestial sanctum and did a healing meditation for Dottie. Then I sent her reiki. All this while standing outside in the sun barefoot on dirt on the top of a hill in a nearby park. It was all quite magical. Afterwards I drove over to the first cheap vet to buy more science diet and to try to speak with the vet. They were sent Dottie's records from the good vet. They wanted to do a $50 recheck but Dottie wasn't with me and I declined. I never got to speak to the vet because my friend/ roommate texted me saying that all 3 of my cats were begging for food! Even Dottie emerged from the bedroom crying for food. This was excellent news and so I hurried home to feed them!
I added 1/2 teaspoon of 4 herb tea to all the cat's food bowls and they all ate! The dose is actually 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds and is recommended to be administered in chicken or beef broth but I was also told that it could be added to their food. Dottie is around 6 pounds so I gave her half the dose. Later on I would double the dose for my other two cats who are bigger than her. Dottie had not taken her thyroid medicine in over 24 hours and she was doing much better! I found cat vomit and diarrhea that evening but wasn't sure which cat did it. My cat Roscoe has a sensitive stomach and I had been in the process of integrating science diet and other brands into their meals. I thought the best approach would be to order a probiotic on amazon. I use Pet Ultimates Probiotics for Cats – 20-Species Cat Probiotic Powder to Treat Diarrhea, Vomiting, Digestive Support & Cat Antibiotics Recovery – Cat Health Supplies (44 gr). Dottie had also been sneezing and I caught my cat Felix sneezing a few times so I felt it was time to add silver (a natural antibiotic) to their meals as well. I use Sovereign Silver. Colloidal silver is also good for curing urinary infections in cats! So just in case the antibiotic shot didn't work, the silver would be used as a backup! I forgot to add silver that night but I added 4 herb tea to all their meals and they all ate. I also gave Dottie fresh water with fresh tea in it! Slippery elm, an ingredient in 4 herb tea, is also helpful for curing urinary infections in cats!
The next day, Saturday, I added 4 herb tea and silver to everyone's breakfast. They all ate!
I made scrambled eggs at around 3pm, Dottie's favorite! I knew she would come out begging for eggs so I purposely made a little bit of egg whites for her since the orange part is no good for her condition. I didn't add salt! She didn't eat the eggs immediately, but eventually she ate them after eating some science diet.
On Saturday evening Forza 10 arrived and it was a big hit with Dottie. My cat Roscoe loved it too! Dottie showed great excitement eating this new flavor and came back for more and more. I was delighted. She was returning to her old self again! I decided to purchase more Forza 10, enough for the month. FYI The stuff is not cheap! But I believe it will be worth it! I also purchased more silver and probiotics for cats. On Sunday I brewed fresh 4 herb/ Essiac tea as my new herbs had arrived on Saturday night! Everything was looking great and I knew that everything would be okay! However, my cat Felix started showing signs of sickness! So I started adding extra Sovereign Silver to his food... I also administered 4 herb/ Essiac tea directly into his mouth with a syringe one time!
On Sunday afternoon I added an earthing device to one of the main beds that Dottie sleeps in. I had already placed an amethyst in this bed previously...and Dottie even got to sleep with my high powered synergy stones for a few hours when I gave her reiki. On Monday I gave all the cats a fresh dose of the new 4 herb/ Essiac tea. I also started adding cat probiotics in their food. Dottie needed probiotics particularly because of the antibiotic shot.
Unfortunately, Felix got worse and stopped eating so I had to take him to the vet on Tuesday. I think the whole situation with Dottie was very stressful for him. The vet said that Felix may have an upper respiratory infection. They gave him fluids, an anti-nausea shot and a crypto titer blood test that he was overdue for since he still has cryptococcus of the central nervous system. I also asked the Rosicrucian Council of Solace to add Felix to their healing meditations which they did. I also added him to my sanctum meditation.
The next day, today in fact, the day I am publishing this article, Felix appears to be much better. He ate a little food this morning. Not much! But he sounds better and looks better!
In retrospect, I feel that I made some mistakes with Dottie, but I also feel that these mistakes can be corrected. The Ziwi Peak and Feline Naturals grass fed beef with kelp and green muscles meal from New Zealand, although very healthy (and expensive), is not correct for feline hyperthyroidism or kidney disease. Ziwi Peak did however help save my cat Felix when he was diagnosed with cryptococcus of the central nervous system many years ago. He was also saved by reiki and the medication fluconozale which he still presently takes. So as you can see, I am not completely against conventional medication if it is absolutely necessary. But in Dottie's case, I feel that the thyroid medication prescribed for her would be more harmful than beneficial.
I also shouldn't have added trace minerals/ electrolytes to Dottie's food and water, although I intuitively realized my mistake and stopped doing this a while ago. Electrolytes contain sodium and magnesium! Feeding her eggs that I had added salt to was also quite wrong. Perhaps without Dr. Mercola's kidney/liver supplement and organic sulfur Dottie would be worse right now? Who knows? But I can't live in the past. All I can do now is take steps to make things better! And I do believe that I am on the right track! Most importantly, my cats are all very loved and they know it! I will do whatever I can to make their last days on this planet as comfortable and lengthy as possible. If I had the power to do so I would keep them all alive with me for as long as I live. Maybe this is possible? Who knows? Miracles do happen!
